Continental Airlines: History and Facts
Founded in Colorado in 1934 under the name Varney Speed Lines, the airline started its operations in 1935 with a single-engine plane that carried four passengers. In 1937, the company’s name was finally changed to Continental Air Lines, primarily because the owner wanted the name to reflect his desire for the airline to expand its routes to a multitude of directions and destinations. In 2010, the airline announced a merger with United Airways.
